What's Up?

The alternative to life without prospects is to shorten it
Dr Andrew Fraser
Scotland’s former Deputy Chief Medical Officer

Ever had a thought you can’t get out of your head?

In a locked ward within a psychiatric hospital, a young man battles with thoughts and fears that just won’t go away. .

Confined to his small room every day after lunch, Robert’s preoccupations veer from the persistent threats of violence from a fellow patient to his attempts to connect with an uncommunicative roommate, from the danger presented by humble everyday objects to the high doses of custard the NHS expect him to consume, and from his intolerable insomnia to his diminishing supply of cigarettes.

Can Robert face another day – and another enforced period of post-lunch ‘relaxation’ time - or will the intensifying paranoia get the better of him?

UP explores the reality of ‘life’ within an intensive psychiatric care unit, and the extreme unpredictability of an unquiet mind.
